Capital One Miles and Chase Ultimate Rewards represent two distinct approaches to travel rewards. For a deep dive into baseline program valuations, see our Capital One Miles Valuation Guide. Chase focuses on category bonuses and domestic sweet spots, while Capital One champions simplicity and flat-rate earning.
Earning Structures (2x vs Categories)
Capital One: The beauty of the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and Venture Rewards Credit Card is the flat 2x miles on every purchase. There's no need to track categories. This makes it an ideal "everyday spend" card.
Chase: The Chase ecosystem relies on category multipliers. You might earn 3x on dining and travel (Sapphire Reserve), 5x on rotating categories (Freedom Flex), and 1.5x on everything else (Freedom Unlimited). Earning optimal points requires carrying multiple cards and knowing when to use which.
Travel Portals
Chase Travel Portal: Chase offers a multiplier when booking through their portal. Sapphire Preferred cardholders get 1.25 cents per point, and Reserve cardholders get 1.5 cents per point. This makes Chase points excellent for booking boutique hotels or cheap economy flights where transferring to partners doesn't make sense.
Capital One Travel: Capital One miles have a fixed value of 1 cent each when used to "cover travel purchases" or book through their portal. The portal itself is powered by Hopper and is excellent for price tracking, but you don't get a value multiplier.
Transfer Partner Overlaps
Both programs allow you to transfer points to airline and hotel partners at a 1:1 ratio.
Shared Partners: Air France/KLM Flying Blue, British Airways Avios, Singapore KrisFlyer, Air Canada Aeroplan, Emirates Skywards, Virgin Red.
Key Differences:
Chase Exclusives: World of Hyatt (the most valuable hotel partner in the game), United MileagePlus, Southwest Rapid Rewards.
Capital One Exclusives: Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles, Avianca LifeMiles, Choice Privileges.
Verdict
Choose Capital One if: You want a simple, one-card setup (earning 2x everywhere) and plan to transfer miles to international airline partners or use them to erase miscellaneous travel purchases.
Choose Chase if: You are willing to juggle a few cards to maximize category bonuses, frequently fly domestic airlines like United or Southwest, or love redeeming points for high-value Hyatt hotel stays.
